Welcome to the Battle of Olympus Dev Diary, a series dedicated to giving the community a behind-the-scenes look into the process of creating a game from the perspective of the game developers.
In Dev Diary #6, we’ll tell you all about what we’ve been building for the past 2 weeks.
- Fire & electricity effect
- Improved hit timings
- Special & super attacks
- UI rework
- Coming up next…
Fire & electricity effect
With most of the basic structure and mechanics of the game built, we’ve recently started working more intensely on the visual aspect – what is usually thought of as “eye candy”. Obviously, it’s not just that. Getting these effects right allows us to clearly communicate to players what is happening without getting in the way of the flow of the game and user experience.
The work was going well so we decided to keep going. We also added electricity effects!
Improved hit timings
This is both really important and really difficult. Altering the speed of the animation can lead to an intense and fun, but ultimately unfair result in a competitive environment. After lots of back and forth about this, we are confident we got the hit timings right.
Tedious, but important work.
Special & super attacks
We’ve promised to make some progress on these and we have. We are still tweaking the super attacks and working on specials. Expect a full update in 2 weeks, i addition to everything we list below. Pinky promise.
UI rework
We’ve been hit with a flash of inspiration, so we threw out parts of the old UI and made something new. No guarantees we won’t improve this further.
Also, it was becoming increasingly clear that we need to clarify keybindings.
Coming up next…
Here is what we plan to work on for the next 2 weeks:
- Ultimate moves
- Improving the timings of the attacks
- Getting a better AI opponent
- New sounds/music
- Releasing the new and updated demo!
Until then,
See you in Olympus!
